OPEN METHODS

How our tools and operational examples are built.

Formulas you can reproduce, assumptions you can change, and limitations we make visible.

Our interactive tools are educational decision aids. They do not infer the staffing, profit or service quality of a real property unless a manager supplies appropriate inputs, and their outputs are not independently validated benchmarks.

Scope of our evidence

Published definitionsEstablished formulas and standards are linked to identifiable third-party sources.
Illustrative scenariosHypothetical numbers demonstrate a method, not actual hotel performance or customer outcomes.
Product-led workflowsDescriptions of Digital Room Service explain intended software behavior, not independently observed savings.
Original researchReserved for future work with clearly described data collection, sample, consent and limitations.

Calculator formulas

ToolCore methodKey limitation
Staffing calculatorWorkload hours ÷ productive hours per worker; consider required coverage and shifts separately.Does not replace labor-law, union, safety or service-level planning.
Request capacity plannerOccupied rooms × requests per room × peak share × handling minutes; compare with productive time available.Peaks, simultaneous tasks and task complexity differ by property.
Room-service profitSales revenue minus declared variable and fixed operating costs; break-even based on contribution per order.Excludes unentered taxes, waste, allocations or delivery and equipment costs.
Labor costRegular pay + overtime + benefits + other entered employee costs.Actual overtime, payroll taxes and employment law vary by jurisdiction.
Hotel KPIsOccupancy = occupied / available rooms; ADR = room revenue / sold rooms; RevPAR = room revenue / available rooms.Define room inventory and reporting period consistently.

Worked example: peak-hour workload

For a hypothetical 100-room hotel at 75% occupancy, 0.8 requests per occupied room per day produces 60 daily requests. If 20% of demand arrives in the busiest hour and each request requires 15 handling minutes, the peak requires 180 person-minutes. At 45 productive minutes per worker in that hour, estimated equivalent capacity required is 4 workers for that one task stream. This ignores overlapping duties, minimum coverage, and queueing variability.

Using and correcting these methods

Replace every default input with your own observed data. Record collection dates, denominators and exclusions before comparing properties or periods. If you find a formula, source or example that needs correction, contact support@digitalroomservice.com and include the affected URL. Our editorial policy explains corrections and updates.

New descriptive-statistics tool: The hotel response-time calculator uses arithmetic mean, median, nearest-rank P90 and the share of observations at or under an editable target. It calculates locally and never claims industry benchmarks. See the measurement guide for sample interpretation.
