Hotel Room Service Over the Holidays: A Thanksgiving-to-New-Year’s Plan for 2026
At a glance
Why this season is different for room service
Holiday travel is huge. AAA projected a record 81.8 million Americans traveling over Thanksgiving 2025, mostly by car. Its 2026 forecast typically comes out in November. Many of those travelers stay with family, but hotels near family, airports and highways see guests who arrive late, tired and hungry, often with kids. Restaurants nearby may close or book out, so in-room dining becomes the easy answer.
Meanwhile, your own team wants the holiday off. AHLA’s 2026 owner survey found more than half of properties still somewhat or severely understaffed. That’s why the plan below leans on short menus and fewer handoffs.
The three-wave plan
| Wave | Guest pattern | Menu idea | Ops focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving (Wed–Sun, Nov 25–29) | Late arrivals Wednesday, family groups, restaurants closed Thursday | Plated turkey dinner for 1 or 2, kids’ plate, pie by the slice | Pre-orders by Wednesday 6 p.m.; staff Thursday 4–9 p.m. |
| Christmas (Dec 24–26) | Couples and families, quiet mornings | Christmas breakfast tray, hot chocolate kit, festive dessert | Breakfast pre-order hangers; reduced but reliable hours |
| New Year’s Eve/Day | Late-night celebrations, late wake-ups | Midnight snack box, sparkling + strawberries, recovery brunch | Extend late-night menu; plan brunch from 9 a.m. Jan 1 |
Menu ideas are examples. Check alcohol service rules, which vary by state and county.
Six-week countdown checklist
- ☐ Mid-Oct–early Nov: pick 4–8 holiday items that hold heat and travel well; cost them.
- ☐ By Nov 9: confirm who works Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day and NYE; offer premium shifts early.
- ☐ By Nov 16: publish holiday hours and menu on the digital menu and directory; brief the front desk.
- ☐ Thanksgiving week: open pre-orders; set item availability so sold-out dishes disappear.
- ☐ Early Dec: review Thanksgiving: late orders, remakes, complaints. Adjust for Christmas.
- ☐ Dec 30: stock NYE items; set extended hours; plan Jan 1 brunch staffing.
Make pre-orders do the heavy lifting
Pre-orders turn a 7 p.m. scramble into a schedule. Options:
- Door-hanger breakfast cards collected by the night shift.
- A “Holiday dinner” category on the digital menu with a cut-off time in the description.
- Front desk offering pre-orders at check-in, when guests ask about dinner anyway.
With DigitalRoomService you can create categories, mark items available or unavailable, and route categories to kitchen display stations. Delivery can then go to an eligible staff member once every item is ready.
Staffing the runner gap
Holiday food is rarely late because the kitchen is slow. It’s late because nobody is free to carry it up. Fixes that work:
- Cross-train front desk, bell staff and housekeeping supervisors to run trays in a pinch.
- Let the system offer the delivery to whoever is on shift and least busy. In DigitalRoomService, task assignment can consider role, shift status, workload and floor, with manager escalation when no one is free.
- Cap late-night menus to items one cook can plate fast.
