Where things stand in late 2026

Pressure hasn’t gone away. AHLA’s March 2026 survey says more than half of respondents were somewhat or severely understaffed, and the top incentives hotels used were higher wages (70%), flexible scheduling (54%) and hotel discounts (54%). BLS JOLTS data for August 2026 still shows hundreds of thousands of open jobs in accommodation and food services. Holidays make it sharper, because demand spikes on the days your team most wants off.

Step 1: Forecast by hour, not by week

  1. Pull last year’s data

Occupancy, arrivals/departures, F&B covers and request volume by hour for the same holiday days.

  2. Adjust for this year

Group blocks, events, flights and on-the-books occupancy.

  3. Find the peaks

Typical holiday peaks: checkout rush, late-afternoon arrivals, breakfast, evening in-room dining.

  4. Staff the peak, not the average

A short 4-hour shift at the peak often beats an extra full shift.

Step 2: Make holiday shifts worth taking

Step 3: Cross-train for bottlenecks

Pick the jobs where one absence breaks service, usually room service runners, room attendants on checkout days and the overnight desk. Give each a backup list. A one-page “how we do it here” card for each task helps a lot, and so does a housekeeping SOP checklist.

Step 4: Stop routing work by shouting

On short-staffed days the real waste is coordination: radio calls, “who’s free?”, sticky notes, the same towel request taken twice. Front desk staff on Reddit’s r/TalesFromTheFrontDesk know the late-night towel call well, especially when the desk can’t be left unattended.

A digital task flow lets a request go straight to a team queue. DigitalRoomService runs this in the browser. Staff check in with a PIN or QR, see their tasks on their own phone (no app download), and optional Autopilot can suggest or make assignments based on role, shift, workload and floor, escalating to a manager when nobody is available. Managers can always assign manually. Measure your own results instead of assuming a fixed saving. The staff savings calculator works from your inputs.

Step 5: Protect the team

  • ☐ Cap consecutive doubles; no one works every holiday.
  • ☐ Schedule breaks on the roster, not “when it’s quiet.”
  • ☐ Give clear escalation: who to call when it goes wrong.
  • ☐ Thank people publicly, and debrief within a week.
  • ☐ Note what broke, then fix it before the next holiday.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should hotels plan holiday staffing?

Six to eight weeks is a common minimum: early enough to offer shift choice and incentives before people make plans.

What incentives help hotel staff work holidays?

Holiday premium pay, fair rotation, paired days off, meals and transport, and short peak shifts are common. AHLA’s 2026 survey lists higher wages, flexible scheduling and hotel discounts as top incentives.

How can a small hotel cover holidays with few staff?

Cross-train for bottleneck roles, shorten menus, use digital requests so the desk isn’t a call center, and staff peak hours rather than whole days.

Is there still a hotel staffing shortage in 2026?

AHLA’s March 2026 survey found more than half of respondents somewhat or severely understaffed.
